Note* Mary Ann Layo The Civil War Pension file for Levious Carbino includes a sworn statement given by Peter Lavine that his wife, Catherine Carbino Lavine, is a first cousin to Mary Ann Layo Carbino. That would make Regis Carbino, Catherine's father, and Mary Ann's mother, Julia Ann Carbino, brother and sister.

The 1900 census of Massena gives Mary's birth date as Jan. 1855. She had five children, 4 living.

Mrs. Mary Ann Carbino died at her home on North Main street Saturday after an illness of only a few days following a stroke of apoplexy. The funeral was held from her late home Tuesday, her pastor, Rev. George H. Stone, officiating. Interment in Pine Grove cemetery beside her husband, who died twelve years ago.

Mrs. Carbino's maiden name was Mary Ann Layo and she was born in Massena in May, 1849. In early life she married Levius Carbino, of Massena. She was the mother of four children, three of whom have died, one invalid daughter, Mrs. Electa Lalone, surviving. She also leaves one brother, David Layo and four grandchildren.

During her last illness she was tenderly cared for by her daughter-in-law, Mrs. Nettie Carbino. She had been for many years a faithful and devoted member of the Advent Christian church of this place.

Note* Levius Carbino Levius Carbino served in the Civil War with the 92nd NY infantry. There are two records from this service. June 6, 1873, Invalid Pension Application No. 184,261, Certificate No. 220,833. June 18, 1911, Widow's Pension Application 966,845, Certificate No. 725,930, New York. He enrolled Oct. 26, 1861 at Potsdam, Captain Hiram Anderson's Company (A). Source- Evert's History of St. Lawrence County, NY.

An affidavit Levious gave in his Civil War Pension File describes him as 60 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches, dark complexion, hair grey, eyes grey. He was wounded in the left knee joint and sustained paralysis of the left arm in the war.

I believe he was enumerated in the 1860 census of Massena as Cephur Carbino, age 19, farm laborer, living with the family of Benjamin and Barbara Sutton.

Levius, Mary, and son David are enumerated in the 1900 census of Massena, NY. Levius is 59 years old, born Feb. 1841 in New York. He was married 29 years. His occupation was day laborer. He could read and write.

LEVIUS CARBINO

Levius Carbino an old resident of this village, died at his home on North Main street Tuesday afternoon after an illness lasting since February 12 last, when he was stricken with apoplexy and had since been in bed helpless. The funeral will be held this (Thursday) afternoon from the home at two o'clock and from the Advent church at half-past two o'clock. The interment will be in Pine Grove cemetery.

Levius Carbino was born on Sheik's Island, just above Cornwall, February 23, 1842, and was one of a large family. His parents moved to Louisville when he was young and settled near Shepard's corners. During the Civil War he enlisted in Company A., 92nd N.Y. Vols., and served three years and six months, being twice wounded. In 1868 he married Miss Mary Ann Layo, of Massena, and their home has always been on North Main street in this village where he died. Beside his wife he is survived by one son, David Carbino, and one daughter, Mrs. Electa Lalone, also three brothers, Levi, George and Alexander Carbino, of Massena and four sisters, Mrs. Mary Ryan, Mrs. Eliza Blair and Mrs. Charles Martin, of Massena, and Mrs. Caroline Eastman of Parishville.

Former Local Woman Dies In Missouri. Funeral services were conducted from the Baptist Church in Steele, Mo., Saturday afternoon, June 19, for Mrs. Electa Lalonde, 86, former resident of Massena, who died there after a short illness.

Mrs. Lalonde was born in Massena Aug. 21, 1867, a daughter of the late Levious and Mary Ann Layo Carbino. She had been a semi-invalid for many years and in March, 1926 she left Massena with her daughter, Mrs. Florence Howe, to live in Watseka, Ill. Twenty-two years ago they moved to Steele.

Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Florence Howe, Steele, Mo., one grandson, Howard Trumble, Green River, Wyo., and a sister-in-law, Mrs. David Carbino, Pine St., Massena.

Her nephew, Irving M. Carbino, and wife of Massena visited Mrs. Lalonde when they were returning to Massena from Florida late in April.

Burial was in Mt. Zion Cemetery, Steele, Mo.

OBITUARY ----- David Carbino, a lifelong resident of Massena, died at his home on Pine street yesterday morning at 8:45 after an illness of several years of tuberculosis. The funeral will be held from the Advent Christion church Friday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock, Rev. George H. Stone, the pastor, officiating. Interment will be in Pine Grove cemetery.

David Carbino was born in Massena June 17, 1872, son of the late Levius and Mary Ann Carbino and had spent his entire life here. He graduated from Massena high school, then took a course in the Philadelphia College of Horology, graduating from that institution and then came back to Massena and engaged in the jewelry business. He was an expert watchmaker and continued in that business for fourteen years, selling out six years ago on account of failing health and since that time he has not been able to work.

On May 14, 1902 he married Miss Nettie Morgan, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. S.H. Morgan, of Osnabruck Center, Ont., and to them were born two children, Irving and Bessie, both surviving, together with the widow and his aged mother and one sister, Mrs. Electa Lalonde, who have the sincere sympathy of a large circle of friends in their bereavement.

Mr. Carbino was a faithful member of the Advent Christian church and was active in its support as long as his health permitted. He was a high type of christian gentleman, honest and industrious, and the community suffers a loss in his passing.
