Note* Maurice Vigneau In New France, the Ile d'Orléans was one of the first seigneuriallands to be cleared, settled and farmed. The amount of agriculturalland is very limited. Division of individual rotures was oftencomplete in a generation, when all of the good land was conceded.Rotures could not be further subdivided into economical farms. For thesons of the inhabitants, an alternative to tilling the soil wasprovided by the technical school founded by Bishop de Laval atCap-Tourmente, in 1684. Since the immigration of artisans did not keeppace with the population growth, the school taught carpentry, cabinetmaking, masonry, wood carving and iron working. This is where thecraftsmen were trained who helped build the thirty stone churches inQuébec between 1680 and 1730.
Before becoming a sailor by profession, Maurice Vigneau had attendedthe technical school since he was 15 years old. Here, he receivedinstruction and training in his basic profession of carpentry.
From the 1660s on, colonial officials encouraged shipbuilding, localmining, and pitch and tar production, to reduce France's dependence onforeign sources of these products. Apart from the Saint-Mauriceironworks, the naval shipyard at Québec, which built severalmen-of-war, for the French government, was the most importantindustrial site of the French regime. As well as private shipbuilders,who built ocean-going and coasting vessels.
The inhabitants of the Ile d'Orléans, anchored in the busySaint-Lawrence river, were known to be very skilled in theconstruction of "chaloupes (goelettes or schooners) and other smallboats. It was them, who generally supplied the chaloupes used for theconstruction of ships at Québec.
The Saint-Lawrence river was the "Great Highway" into the colony.Maurice Vigneau could learn well, the skills for navigation and shipcarpentry, which he passed on to his sons in Acadia.
In 1695, Maurice Vigneau, aged 20 years, signed an obligationdocument prepared by the clerk of the royal notary, Louis Chambalon,to the Hôpital-General of Québec, for the pension of his 12 year oldsister, Marie. The document gives the occupation of Maurice Vigneau asa sailor. Placing his only surviving little sister in the seminary forgirls, and guaranteeing a pension and education for her, indicatesthat their parents were by this time, both deceased, and that he wasplanning to leave Québec.
Around 1699-1700, at the age of 25 years, Maurice Vigneau emigratedto Port Royal, Acadia.
The period from 1689 to 1698, was dominated by the struggle forcontrol of North America between England and France. The province ofAcadie had long suffered from neglect from the Ministry of Marine inParis, and the destruction of Port Royal by Sir William Phips in 1690,during King William's War, had been a harsh blow. The Peace of Ryswicksigned on 20 September 1697, ended the war.
On the 28th of March 1701, the former governor of Placentia (inNewfoundland), Jacques-François de Mombeton de Brouillon, wasappointed the new governor of Acadia. He began the long overduereconstruction of the fort at Port Royal. Jean Delabat, a militaryengineer, was sent from France, to supervise the work.
Maurice Vigneau's participation in the restoration of the fort, asmaster carpenter for the king, is shown in the payment he received, inthe records of the fortress.
The home of Maurice Vigneau can be traced to it's exact location byusing a map produced around 1707, by the royal engineer, Jean Delabat.The letter "N" on Delabat's map is ascribed to the name in the legendof "Maurice charpentier pour le Roy." The house stood on the southside of the main street, in the town of Port Royal, near the fort. Thestreet was named Dauphin Road, today it is called Lower Saint GeorgeStreet, Annapolis Royal. When comparing Delabat's map with a modernmap, the property of Maurice Vigneau was located across from thepresent day King's Theatre, where the Farmer's Market and old PostOffice are presently situated.
Along the Dauphin Road, once lived a group of prominent citizens whoplayed important roles in the administration and defense of PortRoyal. On the north side of the street closest to the river, lived thetraders Jean Labat dit Marquis and Sieur Christophe Cahouet, followedby Jean Loppinot, the clerk of the court (Royal Notary) and King'sAttorney of Port Royal. Next to Cahouet, was the store of LouisAllain. Across the street, on the south-west side, stood the home ofthe surgeon-major, Sieur Jacques Pontiff, followed by the home ofSergeant La Chaume, then the blacksmith, Jacques Bonnevie ditBeaumont. Followed by the home of Maurice Vigneau, master carpenterfor the King. All of these homes were burned in June of 1707, whenGovernor Joseph Dudley of Massachusetts launched a seaborne attack onPort Royal.
The New Englanders had always resented the French living so close tothem. Samuel Vetch, along with Colonel Francis Nicholson, arrived inBoston from London, in April of 1709. They left Boston on 18 September1710, with 36 ships and about 3500 men. The French situation at PortRoyal was hopeless, and no match for the British forces. Never beforehad England sent so many men, ships and arms, to conquer so few.
On the first day of October 1710, Port Royal had fallen to theBritish for the fifth and final time. The fort was renamed Fort Ann,in honor of Queen Ann of England.
Maurice Vigneau and his family remained at Port Royal for another 10years.
Some documents found in RG1, volume 8 of the Public Archives of NovaScotia mentioning Maurice Vigneau are as follows:

1. Document number 8, pages 145-148, dated 16 September 1713, text inEnglish. A notarial act of sale of land by John Adams and his wifeHannah of Boston, now residing at Annapolis Royal and Charles Hobbyfrom Boston. John Adams and Hannah his wife sold to Charles Hobby, forthe sum of 100 pounds in New England money, a house 45 feet by 24feet:
"...lying and being in ye Towne of Annapolis Royall Now in ye Tenure& Occupation of M. Patrick Ewingt & Henry Rott settlers being Culled &Bounded on ye South East along ye Street Dauphin measuring forty fivefoot & along ye land belonging to Maurice Vinos on ye South Westmeasuring Twenty four foot - And to ye North East on ye land called yeChurch ground firmly belonging to father Justinian measuring twentyfour foot and ye North West facing the River measuring fifty fivefoot..."

2. Document number 82, pages 157-160, dated 30 September 1713. Anotarial act of land sale between Michel Richard dit Laffondt, withhis wife Agnes, and Charles Hobby of Boston. For the sum of 20 poundsin New England money, Michel Richard and his wife sold land and ahouse situated at Annapolis Royal and presently occupied by StephenRalph, a shoemaker. The land , located on the Dauphin road, measures32 by 52 feet, by the property of Maurice Vigneau, to that whichbelongs to Jacques Bonnevie dit Beaumont, and to the property of RenéLeblanc.

3. Document number 83, pages 169-170, dated 9 January 1713. A notarialact of land sale between Jacques Bonnevie dit Beaumont, blacksmith ofAnnapolis Royal and John Adams of Boston.

The British authorities at Annapolis Royal continuously demanded theAcadians to take the oath of allegiance or quit the country, but atthe same time, made it impossible for them to do so. Governor RichardPhilipps was determined to impose difficulties on the Acadians to keepthem from moving to French territory. This caused the Acadians todevise other ways to effect their departure.
In the spring of 1720, Maurice Vigneau was able to convince theBritish officials at Annapolis Royal, to let him embark on a fishingexpedition. This led to the escape of the Vigneau family to PortToulouse on Isle Royale (Cape Breton). An extract from a letter ofGovernor Richard Phillipps at Annapolis Royal, to the French Governor,Joseph de Monbeton de Brouillan dit Saint Ovide, at Port Toulouse(St-Peter's, Cape Breton), dated 10 August 1720 (Public Archives ofNova Scotia, RG1, volume 14, reel # 15223, text in French), translatedas follows:
"...I wish at present, to address to you, for justice of one namedMaurice Vigneau, recently residing at this river, who had mypermission and my passport to go fishing on the coast during the termsaccorded in the proclamation, and who, for this effect had receivedsome provisions and other necessities from one of the King's subjects,my chief citizen of this place, in the value of six pieces, nineteenshillings and six sous, on the condition to repay this sum on hisreturn, but he is remaining at (I've been told) Cape Breton. I have nodoubt in the least that you won't reply to this, which I have justreason to expect of you in this affair."

On the 25th of August 1722, Monseigneur de Saint-Vallier, Bishop ofQuébec, absolved Maurice Vigneau of Port Toulouse fromexcommunication, imposed on him by Father Justinien Durand,vicar-general of Isle Royale, for propositions contrary to theCatholic faith (see Registre C, pages 130 and 131, at the Archives del'archévêché de Québec).

The Surname Maurice

A custom typically Acadian, and still persists to this day, isAcadians identifying themselves by the first names of their ancestorsthrough their paternal lineage, for example: he was the son of"Jacques à Maurice à Paul à Jean ( five generations of Vigneau's).Some family documents have the surname of the children andgrandchildren of Maurice Vigneau, written as "Maurice" or both"Vigneau-dit-Maurice."

Maurice Vigneau was present at his son Simon's wedding, on 13January 1745, at Beaubassin, and at the marriage of his son Charles,on 22 February 1746, at Beaubassin. Maurice was deceased when hisdaughter Marguerite was married at Beaubassin, on 15 November 1747.Therefore, the probable date of the death of Maurice Vigneau, fatherof all the Acadian Vigneaults, was between 22 February 1746 and 15November 1747, or ca. 1747, at Baie-Verte, Beaubassin, Acadia, agedca. 73 years.
